Digital payments in Mexico will advance mandatorily across key service sectors. The Finance Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved the corresponding bill. Currently, the initiative seeks to modernize commercial transactions across the national territory. For this reason, the proposal will move to the legislative floor next week.

Mandatory card, transfer, and QR code collection

The measure will gradually enforce electronic payment methods in strategic businesses. Specifically, gas stations and highway toll booths must accept credit and debit cards. Likewise, stations will incorporate payments via electronic bank transfers and QR codes. Therefore, cash usage will decrease significantly on highways.

On the other hand, lawmakers argue that regulation will provide greater public safety. Digitalization will reduce physical money handling along transport routes. Furthermore, the strategy will allow better tracking of revenue within informal sectors. For this reason, banking institutions prepare the necessary technological infrastructure.

Impact on national financial inclusion

This reform will accelerate financial inclusion for millions of drivers and commercial vendors. Financial authorities estimate a substantial reduction in toll collection processing times.

Finally, the Congress of the Union will define official schedules for gradual implementation. The government’s main priority will be consolidating a modern, fast, and transparent economic system.
