The Harshest Side of the United States’ Anti-Immigration Agenda

On September 11, the Director of Human Mobility and Development confirmed that hundreds of Mexicans are living in uncertainty due to Trump’s reelection as President of the United States. She reported that since his return to power, 92,582 Mexicans have been forced to return, with Chicago being one of the most frequent points of immigration raids under the U.S. government’s anti-immigration agenda. This has led Mexican migrants to cancel patriotic celebrations to avoid mass detentions during the festivities.

The plan aimed to deport some individuals with criminal records. However, its execution has been described in many cases as “violent,” affecting the entire Latino community, especially Mexicans.

In response to this situation, President Claudia Sheinbaum and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, urged the Mexican community residing in the United States to remain “cautious” and follow measures to protect their safety.

It is expected that on September 15 and 16, Mexican-American citizens avoid participating in risky events or activities, public conflicts, confrontations with authorities, or traffic fines. In case of arrest, it is recommended not to flee or resist and to notify their consulate immediately. In general, it is emphasized to remain compliant with U.S. law.

Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its support to the community through the consular network and recommended that citizens have their “A Number” (alien registration number) available to make it easier for the consulate and family members to locate them. They also advised not to sign documents without legal counsel.

In other states, such as Phoenix, Consul Jorge Mendoza Yescas previously commented that a security plan is in place for the Independence Day celebrations at the Arizona Capitol, and that Mexicans can feel safe attending.

This year, the patriotic celebrations take place in a tense environment, while the Mexican heart proudly remembers its origins, history, and culture both within and beyond the land that saw them born.
