Miguel Borge Martín Warns of Tourism Crisis in Tulum

Former Quintana Roo Governor Miguel Borge Martín pointed out that neglect, lack of regulation by authorities, and greed in resource exploitation have become the main factors driving away both investors and tourists, leading to a progressive decline in tourism in Tulum.

Borge Martín emphasized that, in recent years, the uncontrolled growth of the destination has caused environmental problems, urban saturation, and a loss of local identity, affecting the tourist experience and the confidence of those seeking to invest in the region.

“Tourism success cannot be sustained through irrational exploitation or lack of planning. If we continue prioritizing immediate profit over sustainability, Tulum could face an irreversible collapse,” he warned.

The former governor called for reflection and coordinated action between the public and private sectors to restore the image of the Mexican Caribbean—particularly Tulum—through a strategy focused on urban planning, environmental protection, and responsible development.
