“Yes to disarmament, yes to peace,” Playa del Carmen has launched the 2025 Peace and Voluntary Disarmament Fair, a multi-day event aimed at promoting safety and peaceful coexistence. The initiative, supported by federal, state, and local authorities, will run from May 12 to 16 at various locations throughout the city.
During the fair, adults are encouraged to voluntarily, anonymously, and safely surrender firearms, ammunition, or explosives. In return, participants will receive a cash incentive, with no legal consequences. The goal is to reduce the number of weapons in circulation and prevent accidents or misuse—especially within homes, where many of these weapons are often stored.
Children and teens can also take part by exchanging toy weapons for educational toys that encourage creativity, learning, and social interaction. This activity is designed to raise awareness about nonviolence and promote a culture of peace from an early age.

The fair features around 30 booths representing government agencies at all levels, offering community services, public safety programs, and educational resources. In addition, there will be cultural performances, art activities, and interactive discussions focused on youth engagement and violence prevention.
Officials are urging residents to take part in the event, calling it a meaningful step toward building a safer, more peaceful society. For more information, including locations and schedules, the public is encouraged to visit the official channels of the Solidaridad municipal government.
