On Monday, May 12, 2025, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government will send a letter to the Vatican to invite the newly elected Pope Leo XIV to visit the country. The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, will be in charge of personally delivering the missive during her upcoming visit to the Holy See.

During her morning conference at the National Palace, the President explained that Rodriguez will attend the Mass for the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate, scheduled for Sunday, May 18. Taking advantage of this occasion, the letter of invitation will be delivered to the pontiff. Sheinbaum expressed:
“The Secretary of the Interior is going to go, from there we are going to deliver a letter to the Vatican, if he can see him (the Pope) personally, very well, and if not, in any case a letter is going to be delivered to invite him to come to Mexico already on the date he deems appropriate.”
Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as US Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected as the new leader of the Catholic Church on May 8, following the death of Pope Francis. Sheinbaum highlighted the new pontiff’s social orientation, focused on helping the poor and promoting peace, and was confident that he will support those most in need.
