Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that 20 new aircraft will be added to Mexicana de Aviación between 2025 and 2027, as part of a strategy to consolidate an efficient, profitable, and socially responsible state-run airline.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the main goal of this expansion is to lower airfare prices, increase national air coverage, and serve destinations that have been neglected by commercial airlines. The plan aims to position Mexicana de Aviación as a competitive option that ensures regional connectivity and promotes economic and tourism development in underserved areas.

“Our goal is for Mexicana de Aviación to offer affordable and safe flights, especially to places not currently served by private airlines. This is a company by the people and for the people,” said Sheinbaum during a press conference at the National Palace.

Mexicana de Aviación: A New Chapter as a State Airline

Relaunched in 2023 under the administration of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), Mexicana de Aviación marks the return of one of Mexico’s most iconic airline brands—now with a state-owned model focused on connectivity and public service.

So far, the airline operates flights on strategic routes including Tulum, Tijuana, Acapulco, and Mazatlán, among others. The addition of new aircraft will allow the airline to open more routes and increase flight frequencies, improving the overall passenger experience.

Key Features of the Expansion Plan

  • 20 new aircraft will be incorporated between 2025 and 2027
  • Priority will be given to destinations with limited current air connectivity
  • The plan includes strengthening regional airport infrastructure
  • It aims to generate jobs and boost domestic tourism

This announcement positions Mexicana de Aviación as a key component of the National Air Mobility Plan, promoted by the federal government to guarantee the right to affordable transportation.
