Sargassum in Puerto Morelos receives constant environmental attention along the coast. Municipal authorities maintain an ongoing operation to contain the macroalgae. Specifically, officials focus resources on critical accumulation points across local beaches. This strategy seeks to mitigate ecological impacts on the Mexican Caribbean.
Coordination between Navy forces and Zofemat
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu confirmed the joint inter-institutional efforts. In this sense, the Mexican Navy deployed 52 specialized personnel along the shoreline. Zofemat crews reinforced cleaning tasks following requests from UNAM academic units. For this reason, workers removed over 104 tons within three days.
On the other hand, brigades concentrate efforts around critical spots like The Fives. During August 26 and 27, workers collected 66 tons of seaweed. Likewise, actions near the Reef Systems Unit retrieved another 20 cubic meters. Therefore, all collected material was immediately transferred to official disposal centers.
Commitment to tourism and sustainability
This operational response aligns with the state strategy led by Governor Mara Lezama. Authorities prioritize protecting marine ecosystems and sustaining local tourism. Similarly, maritime monitoring will remain fully active over the coming weeks.
Finally, the local government will strengthen infrastructure to address massive seaweed arrivals. The main goal will be guaranteeing clean, sustainable beaches for future generations.
