Chichén Itzá closed its doors unexpectedly due to a sharp social conflict. Residents, artisans, and ejidatarios from Pisté held intense protests at the archaeological site entrances. Currently, the situation has sparked great concern among regional tour operators.

Damage at the archaeological site entrances

Protesters tore down the gates of the old entrance to pressure the authorities. Their main dissatisfaction is directed towards the new visitor center at the site. According to their statements, this project directly affects their traditional workspaces. For this reason, they decided to block the entrance completely.

Additionally, the ejidatarios demand absolute respect for previous agreements signed with INAH. They claim that the authorities have not fulfilled their community benefit commitments. Therefore, they will maintain the protests until a fair dialogue is established.

Impact on tourism in the Peninsula

This closure affects thousands of domestic and international visitors arriving daily. Nevertheless, INAH has not yet set an official date for reopening the site. For now, travel agencies are seeking cultural alternatives for tourist groups.

Finally, local leaders expect prompt intervention from the federal government. The main goal will be to mediate the conflict and prevent further economic losses in Yucatan.
