During her daily morning press conference this Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she will hold an official meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on June 9 and 10. The meeting is part of the new administration’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with the United States, Mexico’s most important trading partner.

While the full agenda has not been revealed, key topics expected to be discussed include trade relations, border security, migration, environmental cooperation, and public health. Landau’s visit may signal the beginning of a new phase of dialogue between the two countries at a time when regional collaboration is essential to address shared global challenges.

In the same public briefing, Health Secretary David Kershenobich gave an update on the federal government’s efforts to combat denguea mosquito-borne viral disease that poses a recurring health risk in various parts of the country, especially during the rainy season.

Speaking at the “People’s Conference”—a platform created by this administration to directly inform citizens on national priorities—Kershenobich emphasized that community-based prevention is the core of the national strategy. Among the highlighted actions are:

  • Public education campaigns in schools and neighborhoods to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
  • Targeted fumigation efforts in high-risk areas.
  • Enhanced epidemiological surveillance systems to detect and respond to outbreaks early.
  • Closer coordination with state and local governments, which has led to quicker and more effective responses.

Thanks to these measures, the Secretary noted, the number of severe cases and hospitalizations has decreased compared to previous years.

Both announcements reflect the new government’s approach: addressing internal challenges like public health while also positioning Mexico as an active and responsible global partner through strengthened foreign policy.
